Ahmadinejad arrives in Sri Lanka today to strengthen Iran-Lanka ties

Iranian President Mohmoud Ahmadinejad is due in Sri Lanka today for a two day official visit and the government has made elaborate arrangements to receive the first Iranian head of state visiting Sri Lanka with full state honours and to further strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries.

President Ahmadinejad and his entourage are scheduled to arrive at BIA at 5.30 p.m.

The highlight of the official visit of the Iranian president will be the inspection tour at the Sapugaskanda oil refinery expansion project tomorrow morning which is being funded by the Islamic Republic of Iran to the tune of US$ 750 million and the inauguration of the Uma Oya Multipurpose Irrigation Project constructed at a cost of US$ 450 million and funded by Iran at Wellawaya later in the morning.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will receive the Iranian President Ahmadinejad at the BIA on his arrival and a 21 gun salute and Guard of Honour by the Sri Lanka Navy will follow.

The two leaders will hold bilateral talks at 7.30 p.m. at the Presidential Secretariat which will be followed by the signing of agreements at 8.30 p.m. and a press briefing thereafter.
